Prostate adenoma

What is it?
Prostate adenoma, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, most commonly occurring in men over 50. The enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, causing discomfort during urination.

Main symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Weak urine stream, interrupted flow
  • Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Sometimes — urinary incontinence or urinary tract infections

Causes and risk factors:

  • Age over 50
  • Hormonal changes (increased dihydrotestosterone levels)
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Associated conditions (obesity, diabetes)

Treatment options:

  • Medications to reduce prostate size and improve urine flow
  • Minimally invasive procedures (laser therapy, thermal therapy)
  • Surgery for severe symptoms or complications
  • Management of associated conditions and regular monitoring

Why see a doctor?
Untreated prostate adenoma can lead to complications: acute urinary retention, chronic urinary tract infections, and kidney damage. Timely consultation allows selecting the optimal treatment method and maintaining quality of life.
