Gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer

What is it?
A gastric or duodenal ulcer is a chronic condition in which painful sores (ulcers) form on the lining of the stomach or the duodenum.

Main symptoms include:

  • Pain in the upper abdomen, often on an empty stomach or at night
  • Heartburn and acid reflux
  • Nausea, sometimes vomiting
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • In severe cases — bleeding (vomiting blood or black stools)

Causes of ulcers:

  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori
  • Use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Stress and unhealthy diet
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Genetic predisposition

Treatment options:

  • Antibiotic therapy to eliminate Helicobacter pylori
  • Medications to reduce stomach acid
  • Dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments
  • Surgery in complicated cases (perforation, bleeding)

Why see a doctor?
Without treatment, ulcers can cause life-threatening complications such as bleeding, perforation, or even stomach cancer. With timely therapy, the disease can be controlled, and patients can live a full, healthy life.
